Being the strongest natural plant fibres around, hemp has been used for thousands of years by civilizations across the globe as a rope making material. Some of the oldest archaeological evidence of hemp rope dates back to 8,000-10,000 BC in China, where pottery has been found with imprints of hemp rope. From the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans up to the vikings in the middle ages through to the Royal Navy in the 16th-19th centuries, hemp rope has been a common factor in our shared history. Famously used in sailing vessels for millenia and arguably key to the most successful nautical ventures of the British Royal Navy, viking longboats, and ancient maritime civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, hemp rope was prized for its incredible tensile strength and abrasion durability.
Hemp is a fantastic natural sustainable and ethical choice of rope! Hemp plants improve air and soil quality. Hemp is a “carbon sink”, it’s proven to be better than any other plant, crop or tree at removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Hemp plants can grow in poor quality soil, and they leave the soil in a better condition than before they were planted. Hemp requires less water to grow than other natural rope materials such as jute, flax or cotton and requires absolutely no chemicals whereas crops like cotton are responsible for 25% of global agricultural chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers. Hemp rope naturally biodegrades fairly quickly if left untreated, unlike synthetic ropes which release harmful plastic microparticles into the environment and take hundreds of years to break down naturally. Therefore, hemp is the best choice for our environment!
Please note, hemp rope can have a strong and distinct natural aroma when it first arrives. Some have described it as similar to hay or flour sack. Although this aroma does almost disappear after a few months of use, a certain unique smell can remain detectable for the lifespan of the rope. The smell only gets more pleasant over time, while also becoming weaker. After a while the less pleasant notes fade away and you will be left with a sweet and natural hay-like aroma from your hemp rope.
