Indian chemistry professor shows that repurposed plastic can be good for the environment. At 73, Dr Rajagopalan Vasudevan is roughly as old as the mass production of plastic. But that is not the reason why the chemistry professor has a soft spot for the much-maligned material.

MOUNT VERNON, VA—Mount Vernon recently planted an industrial cultivar of hemp on the four-acre Pioneer Farm site to expand its interpretation of George Washington’s role as an enterprising farmer. Under the 2015 Industrial Hemp Law enacted by the Virginia General Assembly and working with the Dr. Michael Timko with the industrial hemp research program of the University of Virginia, Dean Norton, planted industrial hemp seeds across a 1,000-square- foot area. As the first historic home of the founding fathers to plant hemp, Mount Vernon will use the plant as an interpretative tool to help better tell the story of Washington’s role as a farmer. Once harvested, Mount Vernon will use the hemp to ...

DEA says it Won’t Prohibit Cannabis Stems, Seeds for Product Use, Sale

WASHINGTON D.C. –The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on May 22 issued an internal directive that apparently acknowledges some cannabis products are not currently prohibited under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and that specific parts of cannabis plants are not prohibited for use under current policy.

According to the directive, the DEA’s enforcement policy is consistent with a 2004 decision handed down by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, in Hemp Industries Association v. DEA.

The directive stated:

“Products and materials that are ...

SOURCE:https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jun/02/legalise-cannabis-treasury-3bn-drugs

Introducing a legal cannabis market to the UK could earn the Treasury between £1bn and £3.5bn a year in tax revenues, a new report suggests.

Health Poverty Action, an international development organisation, claims that regulating and legalising cannabis in the UK is an “idea whose time has come” and that the windfall could be used to plug the gap in the NHS budget.

“Prohibition has failed,” said the group’s advocacy officer, Natasha Horsfield. “From our perspective, it’s about regulating the market to improve public health outcomes and create a safer environment. But we can see the potential benefits from a taxation perspective if we were to regulate it.”

Support for such a move is growing. Both the ...

The South American country is to set to become the first nation in the world to invoke a complete ban on plastic bags.

A bill that was focused solely on the Patagonia region is now set to encompass the whole of the country if a third reading in the Chamber of Deputies is accepted.

Local media in Santiago said the bill – advocating a complete ban on plastic bags – was endorsed at its second stage in the Senate.

If passed, the law will become effective one year on from an official announcement.

However, supermarkets will be forced ...

Purchasers of cannabidiol preparations need to be very careful when buying products to ensure they acquire CBD from ethical vendors with appropriate quality controls.

Cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid with the potential to treat or manage a range of conditions, is getting increasing attention. It’s a high value product and a lucrative industry. As in any sector, there are shonky operators more than happy to take money from desperate people, with little regard for their well-being.

According to the USA’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 52 people in the state of Utah became ill after using a fake cannabidiol (CBD) product between October 2017 to the end of January 2018 – and 60% were hospitalized.

Those affected reported having used CBD medicinally (29.4%) or recreationally (66.7%), although why anyone would take CBD...

SOURCE: http://www.itv.com/news/channel/2018-05-30/hemp-planting-could-bring-economic-and-environmental-benefits-to-jersey/

More hemp farming is going ahead in Jersey following a successful first trial season.

The Environment Department has been looking at diversifying the island's crop pattern, due to the heavy reliance on potato and dairy farming.

Jersey's Health Minister issued a licence for the substance to be cultivated last year.

Following the move, 2.5 vergees of hemp were grown in a secret location, which has now been revealed as Warwick Farm.

The hemp harvested was of good quality, while the crop also gave a seed and oil yield which was "beyond expectation", according to the Environment Department.

Now farmers have started ...

SOURCE: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-29/melbourne-company-rubbish-recycling-plastic-bag-road/9812450

On the face of things, plastic bags really seem to have no other benefit than carrying your shopping.

They're bad for landfill, animals and the environment.

But a new project in Melbourne's north has successfully been able to take the dreaded plastic bag and turn it into something that can be used again and again — a road.

The 300-metre stretch of road, on Rayfield Avenue in Craigieburn, uses an additive that's made up of 530,000 plastic bags, more than 12,000 recycled printer cartridges and 168,000 glass bottles.

"We think it's a great initiative," said Geoff Porter, the mayor of Hume City Council, which takes ...

SOURCE: https://www.proudgreenbuilding.com/news/clean-biocoal-heating-up-with-hemp-forest-debris-and-kenaf/

On a recent afternoon, Dr. Jagannadh Satyavolu, the theme leader of biomass and biofuels at the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research, discussed the value of a new type of coal made from plants and wood waste that could be a game-changer in power-generation facilities. This is “biocoal,” and it holds real interest for those in Europe and Japan, as well as manufacturers in the United States looking at sustainability and green approaches to energy.

Dr. Satyavolu has a special interest in using forest waste, and even kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus, native to southern Asia) and hemp, in processes that can move energy consumers to greener, more sustainable sources. Those components are central to the ...
